About our grapes...

Our vineyard is home to a small selection of grape varieties, each grown with a specific purpose in mind. Some are grown for winemaking, others for fresh eating, and a few beautifully bridge both worlds.

Not all grapes are meant to be eaten straight from the vine. Our wine grapes, Shiraz and Chenin Blanc, are grown for flavour, structure and balance rather than sweetness. These grapes are generally smaller, with thicker skins and more concentrated flavours. When tasted fresh they can be quite tart, as their balance of sugar and acidity is designed for fermentation. Once harvested, they are taken to the winery where they are transformed into wine.

Alongside these are our table grape varieties, grown specifically to be enjoyed fresh. Black Maroo Seedless, Red Globe and Sultana grapes are larger, juicier and naturally sweeter, with a crisp texture and softer skins. These are the grapes most people imagine when thinking about grape picking, perfect for eating straight from the vine or taking home to share.

We also grow Muscat grapes, a wonderfully versatile variety that sits between both worlds. At Edgecombe, Muscat is used for fortified wine production, but it is equally loved for its aromatic sweetness when eaten fresh. On the vine, Muscat grapes are distinctive and fragrant, offering a rare chance to experience a grape that can be enjoyed both in the vineyard and later in the glass.

During your grape picking experience, you will be picking the sweet table grape varieties, while seeing the wine grapes growing nearby. It is a hands on way to understand how different grapes are grown for different purposes, and to enjoy the simple pleasure of fresh, sun ripened fruit straight from the vine.
